The opposition candidate Wavel Ramkalawan has defeated incumbent President Danny Faure in the presidential election according to official results announced on Sunday, October 25. Ramkalawan won by 54.9 percent to 43.5 percent and is expected to be sworn in on Monday, October 26. The opposition party also won more than a two-thirds majority of National Assembly seats.

Supporters of the opposition have reportedly gathered in the capital Victoria to celebrate following the victory which sees the opposition in power for the first time since 1977.
