At least 18 people were killed and at least 75 injured on Tuesday, October 6, when a vehicle-borne improvised explosive device (VBIED) blast occurred near a bus station in Al-Bab (Aleppo province). The injured have been taken to local hospitals. No group has claimed responsibility for the attack at this time.

A heightened security presence is to be expected in the area over the near term. Further attacks in the region are possible over the near term.

Context

The Syrian Civil War - which began in 2011 - involves many parties, including the Syrian government, the Russian government, the Iranian government, the Turkish government, a US-led coalition, and numerous armed groups on the ground (including the Islamic State) with competing goals.
