Attack on army post in Baghdad kills at least 11 on November 8; security forces responding

Warning

Event

An attack on an army post in western Baghdad late on Sunday, November 8, has killed at least 11 people. The attack reportedly targeted a Popular Mobilization Forces (PMF) post in the Al-Radwaniyah neighborhood, south of Baghdad International Airport (BGW). Local media report that five members of the PMF were killed, along with six civilians. The assailants reportedly arrived in four vehicles and used grenades and automatic weapons in the attack. Army and police units have been deployed to the area in order to search for the perpetrators. No group has claimed responsibility for the attack, although local sources attribute it to the Islamic State.

A heightened security presence is to be expected while security forces continue their investigations into the attack. Further attacks against military positions cannot be ruled out over the near term.

Advice

Those in Baghdad are advised to remain vigilant for militant activity and adhere to any instructions issued by the local authorities and their home governments.

The security environment in Iraq remains complex. Although travel is possible in some areas with proper security protocols in place, other areas should be considered strictly off-limits. Professional security advice and support should be sought prior to all travel.
