Syria: Government forces renew shelling of rebel positions in southern Idlib province November 27

Government forces renew shelling of rebel positions in southern Idlib province on November 27; further attacks likely in medium term

Warning

Event

Government forces renewed their shelling of rebel positions in southern Idlib province on Friday, November 27. Reports suggest that troops bombarded the areas of Al-Fatira, Kansafra, and Sufuhn in the vicinity of Jabal Al-Zawiya. Meanwhile, shelling was reported in the vicinity of Al-Ankawi and Qalidin in the Al-Ghab area of neighbouring Hama province. Reports suggest that Russian aircraft had carried out airstrikes in the hills around Jabal Al-Akrad in Latakia province during the evening of Thursday, November 26. The attacks come amid a recent resumption of clashes between rebel and government forces around Idlib, the last rebel enclave in the country's northwest, after a resumption of operations by Syrian troops in October.

Further attacks are likely in the Idlib province in the medium term.

Advice

Due to extremely poor security conditions, Western governments generally advise against all travel to Syria, with some banning travel to the country. Professional security advice and support should be sought prior to any travel to Syria.
