A magnitude-5.5 earthquake occurred in the Molucca Sea, south of North Sulawesi Province, at around 1531 WITA Dec. 28. The epicenter was 195 km (121 miles) south-southwest of Manado, North Sulawesi Province. The tremor occurred at a depth of around 50 km (31 miles), and weak-to-light shaking may have occurred throughout North Sulawesi Province, eastern parts of Gorontalo and Central Sulawesi provinces, and Taliabu Islands in southwestern North Maluku Province. There have been no initial reports of damage or casualties because of the earthquake. It could take several hours until authorities can conduct comprehensive damage assessments, especially in remote areas. Light aftershocks are possible over the coming days. The incident did not prompt any tsunami advisories.
Officials may temporarily shut down transportation infrastructure in the tremor zone to check for damage. Minor disruptions could occur during shutdowns, but service will likely resume quickly unless authorities discover damage. Utility outages are possible, particularly near the earthquake's epicenter.
