Indonesia: Ride-hailing drivers threaten to demonstrate nationwide as of Dec. 16
Ride-hailing drivers threaten to demonstrate across Indonesia as of Dec. 16. Tight security almost certain during any protests.
Event
Unionized ride-hailing drivers from Gojek and Grab have threatened to stage nationwide demonstrations as of Dec. 16 to oppose the possible merger of the two companies. The drivers claim that any merger would worsen their working conditions. The largest protests will probably occur in Jakarta; possible protest sites include the Business Competition Supervisory Commission (KPPU), the Coordinating Ministry for Maritime and Investment Affairs, the House of Representatives, Indonesia Investment Coordinating Board (BKPM), the State Palace, and the offices of Gojek and Grab. Smaller gatherings will likely occur in other cities, including Bandung, Makassar, Medan, and Surabaya; possible protest venues include government buildings, the offices of Gojek and Grab, and popular gathering sites, such as prominent intersections and monuments. Hundreds to thousands of people may participate in any demonstration.
Authorities will almost certainly increase security, including erecting roadblocks and security cordons, at any protest sites. Localized road closures and business disruptions are likely during gatherings, especially if demonstrators occupy or block any streets. Clashes between protesters and security forces are possible. Mass arrests may occur if security forces consider any demonstrator to violate COVID-19 restrictions.
Advice
Avoid any protest due to increased security measures and possible clashes. Plan for localized transport and business disruptions. If violence occurs nearby, immediately depart the area and seek shelter at a non-government building. Heed all official security and transport advisories.
