Indonesia: Ride-hailing drivers threaten to hold rallies in Jakarta as of Dec. 8

Ride-hailing drivers threaten to stage rallies in Jakarta, Indonesia, as of Dec. 8. Tight security almost certain during any protests.

Warning

Event

Unionized ride-hailing drivers from the applications Gojek and Grab have threatened to stage rallies in Jakarta as of Dec. 8 to oppose the reported possible merger of the two companies. The drivers claim that any merger would worsen their working conditions. Union leaders said they were considering rallying at the Business Competition Supervisory Commission (KPPU), the Coordinating Ministry for Maritime and Investment Affairs, the House of Representatives, Indonesia Investment Coordinating Board (BKPM), and the State Palace. Demonstrations may also occur outside the offices of Gojek and Grab in the capital. Hundreds to thousands of people may participate in any action.

Authorities will almost certainly increase security, including erecting roadblocks and security cordons, at any protest sites and their surrounding areas. Localized road closures and business disruptions are likely during any gathering. Clashes between protesters and security forces are possible. Mass arrests may occur if security forces consider any demonstrator to violate coronavirus disease (COVID-19) restrictions.

Advice

Avoid any protest sites and their surrounding areas due to increased security measures and possible clashes. Plan for localized transport and business disruptions. If violence occurs nearby, immediately depart the area and seek shelter at a non-governmental building. Heed all official security and transport advisories.
