A magnitude-5.1 offshore earthquake occurred off the Mindanao region at 1034 Dec. 25. The epicenter was about 125 km (78 miles) southeast of General Santos City. The tremor occurred at a depth of about 112 km (70 miles), and light to moderate shaking may have occurred in parts of Davao, Mindanao, Soccsksargen, and South Cotabato regions. There have been no initial reports of damage or casualties because of the earthquake; however, it could take several hours until authorities can conduct comprehensive damage assessments, especially in remote areas. Aftershocks are possible over the coming days.
