Syria: Islamic State claims responsibility for Dec. 30 attack on bus in Deir Ez-Zur Governorate /update 1

On Dec. 31, Islamic State (IS) claimed responsibility for an attack on a bus traveling on the Deir Ezzor-Palmyra Road (M20) near Kobajjeb in Deir Ez-Zur Governorate which had taken place the previous day. The group claimed to have killed 40 Syrian army soldiers and wounded six others. Syrian state media, however, had earlier reported that at least 25 people were killed and 13 others were wounded in the assault. Authorities have not released further details on the incident.

Heightened security and localized ground travel disruptions remain likely in the affected area.
