Australia: Authorities issue lockdown order for Greater Brisbane 1800 Jan. 8-1800 Jan. 11 over COVID-19 concerns

Officials order lockdown for Greater Brisbane, Australia, 1800 Jan. 8-1800 Jan. 11 over COVID-19 concerns. Disruptions likely.

Critical

Event

Queensland authorities have ordered a lockdown in Greater Brisbane, including Ipswich, Logan, Moreton Bay, and Redlands, 1800 Jan. 8-1800 Jan. 11 due to concerns of possible spread of a new variant of coronavirus disease (COVID-19). Residents in the region must stay at home, except for essential reasons, such as purchasing goods, seeking medical care, meeting legal obligations, or attending funerals or weddings. People can also travel for work, volunteer, or study purposes if remote options are impossible. Locals can leave home to exercise with one other person from a different household. Officials will restrict household gatherings to two guests per day. Authorities will also require people to wear facemasks anywhere outside the home.

Nonessential businesses, including cinemas, gyms, and entertainment and recreation venues, must close. Essential companies that remain open must limit density to one person per four square meters (43 square feet); maximum capacity is limited to 20-50 people, depending on venue size. Restaurants, cafes, and pubs can continue to operate takeaway and delivery services.

Public transport will operate normally, and the government has not cut off transport links to the metropolitan area. However, travelers to Greater Brisbane must remain in the region and abide by restrictions until the lockdown period ends. Increased security is likely in the metropolitan area to enforce the measures. Fines are likely for noncompliance with regulations.

Advice

Follow all official instructions. Remain polite and nonconfrontational if questioned by security personnel. Avoid crowded areas as a precaution. Stock up on essential supplies. Confirm business appointments in affected areas.

Exercise basic health precautions, especially frequent handwashing with soap and water, or an alcohol-based hand sanitizer if soap and water are unavailable. Practice good coughing/sneezing etiquette (i.e., covering coughs and sneezes with a disposable tissue, maintaining distance from others, and washing hands). There is no evidence that the influenza vaccine, antibiotics, or antiviral medications will prevent this disease, highlighting the importance of diligent basic health precautions.
