Event

A magnitude-5.5 offshore earthquake occurred in the Arufura Sea at 1844 Jan. 31. The epicenter was about 107 km (66 miles) east of Tual. The tremor occurred at a depth of about 8 km (5 miles) and light shaking was probably felt throughout southern coastal communities of West Papua Province and eastern parts of Maluku Province. There have been no initial reports of damage or casualties as a result of the earthquake; however, significant damage is unlikely. It could take several hours until authorities can conduct comprehensive damage assessments, especially in remote areas. The event has not prompted any tsunami advisories.

Plan accordingly for aftershocks. Out of an abundance of caution vacate multistory buildings where shaking was felt. Monitor local media for updates.
