Indonesia: Officials confirm that Sriwijaya Air passenger aircraft crashed north of Jakarta Jan. 9; search and rescue operations ongoing /update 1

Officials have confirmed that Sriwijaya Air (SJ) flight 182 crashed shortly after take-off from Soekarno-Hatta International Airport (CGK) at approximately 1440 WIB Jan. 9. The aircraft lost contact with air traffic controllers near Pulau Lancang and Pulau Laki in the Java Sea, located north of Jakarta. Authorities have deployed emergency personnel to the impact area to search for survivors. Officials have indicated that the precise location of the aircraft is unknown. The airplane, a Boeing 737-500, was due to fly to Supadio International Airport (PNK) in Pontianak, West Kalimantan Province. Media reports indicate that 53 passengers and 12 crew were aboard the flight.

Emergency services will almost certainly remain deployed at the crash site in the coming days. Disruptions to Sriwijaya Air, and possibly other flights at CGK and PNK, are possible through Jan. 9.
