Kazakhstan: Parliamentary elections to take place nationwide Jan. 10
Kazakhstan will hold parliamentary elections Jan. 10. Election rallies likely ahead of poll. Increased security likely on polling day.
Event
Kazakhstan will hold parliamentary elections Jan. 10. Election-related events, including rallies and protests, will take place in the build-up to the poll; clashes between supporters of rival political groups, or between protesters and security forces, are possible at any such gatherings that may take place.
Authorities will almost certainly deploy security forces in major cities and near polling stations nationwide on the day. Commercial and transport disruptions nationwide are almost certain.
Context
Kazakhstan's parliament has 154 seats with members elected for a five-year term. Despite President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev recently approving a range of political reforms in an apparent effort to improve transparency and public confidence in the electoral process, only six political parties will contest this year's elections.
Elections are traditionally dominated by the ruling Nur Otan party, which is once again expected to win by a wide margin. The five opposition parties permitted to register for the election are considered to be largely loyal to the ruling party.
Advice
Avoid all demonstrations, political rallies, and political party offices as a precaution. Seek updated information from local, trusted sources on protest locations and associated disruptions.
