Maldives: Protests possible nationwide, especially in Male, due to scheduled court verdict in high-profile case Jan. 21

Protests possible across Maldives as former President Abdulla Yameen faces verdict in money laundering case Jan. 21. Tight security likely.

Warning

Event

Protests are possible nationwide ahead of, during, and after the Maldivian High Court ruling on an appeal by former President Abdulla Yameen in a money laundering case Jan. 21. The Criminal Court convicted and sentenced Yameen to five years in prison in November 2019. His supporters - mainly members of his Progressive Party of Maldives and coalition partner People's National Congress party - have alleged the investigation as politically motivated. Turnout at demonstrations will likely vary by location; the largest gathering will probably occur in Male, while hundreds may participate in other urban center.

Security forces will probably be on high alert nationwide. Demonstrations and street marches will likely prompt localized transport disruptions, especially in Male. Popular gathering sites include the high court, political party offices, government buildings, public squares, and religious sites. Demonstrations are unlikely to affect the country's tourist resorts and Male's Ibrahim Nasir International Airport (MLE). Clashes between the authorities and demonstrators could occur if protesters breach security cordons or if police forcibly disperse crowds; security forces are likely to quell any violent unrest quickly. Clashes between rival activists are also possible in the event of counterprotests.

Advice

Avoid all demonstrations as a precaution; allow additional time for travel in urban centers. If a large protest materializes nearby, immediately leave the area and seek shelter away from government buildings. Monitor trusted local sources for updates on protests and related disruptions. Heed all traffic and security advisories.
