Warning

Event

Residents have erected roadblocks in Comani, Tsingoni Commune, blocking the flow of traffic on highways passing through the town, Jan. 11. All vehicular movement between Combani and Mirereni has been blocked. Travelers attempting to reach the capital, Mamoudzou through Combani have reportedly been turned back.

The cause of the roadblocks are unclear; however, recurrent low-level protests and clashes between youth in the Mirereni and Combani neighborhoods have been reported in recent months. Authorities will likely increase security in the area as Combani lies at the intersection of the CCD 1 and 3 highways; travel disruptions along these routes are likely through Jan. 11.

Advice

If violence breaks out nearby, immediately depart the area and seek shelter in a safe location. Do not attempt to navigate any roadblocks, as protesters could attack vehicles.
