A magnitude-6.8 earthquake occurred in the Russia-Mongolia border region at 0532 Jan. 12. The epicenter was about 33 km (21 miles) from Turt, Mongolia. The tremor occurred at a depth of about 10 km (6 miles). Very strong to severe shaking was reported in the town of Murun and was likely experienced across Mongolia's Kovsgol Aimag Province; light to moderate shaking was reported as far away as in the cities of Irkutsk and Cheremkhovo in Russia. There have been no initial reports of damage or casualties as a result of the earthquake; significant damage is likely close to the epicenter. It could take several hours until authorities can conduct comprehensive damage assessments, especially in remote areas. Strong aftershocks are likely over the coming days.
