Additional protests denouncing coronavirus disease (COVID-19) measures are possible in Ulaanbaatar through late January following a large demonstration Jan. 20. Thousands of demonstrators gathered at Sukhbaatar Square in Ulaanbaatar to denounce the government's handling of the COVID-19 pandemic. Participants also denounced the alleged poor treatment of a COVID-19 patient and her child. The protests led to the resignation of Prime Minister Khurelsukh Ukhnaa. Demonstrations related to the Prime Minister's resignation are also possible in the coming days. Demonstrators will probably gather at public squares, especially Sukhbaatar Square, and outside government buildings. Gatherings could involve hundreds to a few thousand people.

Security personnel will likely monitor protests and may try to break up more disruptive rallies. Clashes between protesters and security personnel are possible, especially if police forcibly attempt to disperse demonstrators.
