PNG: West New Britain enacting COVID-19 restrictions as of Jan. 4
Officials implementing COVID-19 restrictions in West New Britain Province, Papua New Guinea, as of Jan. 4. Plan for travel disruptions.
Event
Authorities have increased social distancing and other restrictions in West New Britain Province through at least Jan. 21, due to a coronavirus disease (COVID-19) outbreak. A daily 2200-0500 curfew will continue throughout the province. Residents seeking medical or police support or employees who must travel during curfew hours are exempt from the measure. The government has banned most public gatherings, including sporting and cultural events; however, religious services can continue with social-distancing measures in place. Provincial or national church gatherings remain banned. Markets, fuel stations, ports, and essential businesses can continue to operate. Restaurants will remain open for takeaway services, except alcohol sales; establishments inside hotels can continue to serve alcohol with food.
The government has ordered all transport to and from the province to stop through Jan.14. However, officials will allow a five-day grace period Jan. 2-7 for travelers already in the province and West New Britain residents in other areas to return home. All passengers to and from the province must undergo rapid antigen COVID-19 testing before travel. Public transport continues to operate, but drivers and passengers must wear face coverings.
Increased security is likely to deploy to enforce the restrictions, though reports indicate enforcement has been sporadic. Checkpoints are possible in some areas, particularly during curfew hours. Restrictions on transport and business capacity could reduce the availability of services and cause some localized business disruptions. Protests against the measures are possible.
Advice
Follow all official instructions. Remain polite and nonconfrontational if questioned by security personnel. Avoid crowded areas as a precaution. If an unruly crowd forms nearby, immediately leave the area and seek shelter in a secure location. Confirm all transport reservations and allow additional time for travel.
