Georgia: Parents planning to march in central Tbilisi Feb. 26

Women's Movement to protest in Tbilisi, Georgia, from 1700 Feb. 26; localized disruptions possible.

Informational

Event

The Women's Movement is planning a march in central Tbilisi Feb. 26 to denounce systemic failings that allegedly led to the recent suicide of a teenager. An estimated 1,000 parents are expected to gather on Rose Revolution Square at 1700 before marching to Freedom Square, where they will rally.

Although the demonstration is likely to pass off without incident, related security measures could prompt localized transport disruptions, particularly as the march passes the parliament building on Rustaveli Avenue due to ongoing opposition protests at the site. Current COVID-19 measures in Georgia place strict restrictions on public gatherings, and police could attempt to disperse the protesters if they are deemed to be breaching these restrictions; violence is unlikely.

Advice

Allow additional time for travel near the march route on the evening of Feb. 26. Avoid the demonstration as a routine security precaution and to mitigate associated disruptions.
