Indonesia: Labor groups to protest in multiple cities 1000-1200 Feb. 17

Labor groups to rally in multiple Indonesian cities, 1000-1200 Feb. 17, over alleged corrupt practices in national health system investment.

Warning

Event

The labor group Confederation of Indonesian Trade Unions (KSPI) plans to stage simultaneous rallies in multiple cities, including Jakarta, 1000-1200 Feb. 17. The action is to denounce the alleged corrupt practices in investment projects related to the national health system, the Social Security Administrator for Health Indonesia (BPJS). The largest action will probably take place at the national BPJS headquarters in Jakarta. Workers intend to also demonstrate at the BPJS headquarters in Banda Aceh, Bandung, Batam, Denpasar, Makassar, Medan, Semarang, Serang, and Surabaya. Rallies may also occur at the BPJS regional headquarters in Balikpapan, Palembang, and Pekanbaru. Dozens to hundreds of people may participate in each action.

Authorities will highly likely bolster security, including erecting roadblocks and security cordons, at rally sites. Localized transport and business disruptions are possible, especially if demonstrators occupy roads near the protest locations. Clashes could occur if police forcibly disperse workers, or if the demonstrators attempt to break through security barriers. Mass arrests are possible if officials consider any protesters to violate COVID-19 restrictions.

Advice

Avoid any demonstrations as a precaution. Plan for possible road closures and business disruptions near rallies and seek alternative routes to circumvent affected areas. If any violence erupts nearby, immediately depart the location and seek shelter in a safe, non-government building. Heed all official traffic and security advisories.
