A magnitude-5.3 earthquake occurred in northern Papua Province, Indonesia, at around 0409 Feb. 17. The epicenter was about 179 km (111 miles) west-southwest of Jayapura. The tremor occurred at a depth of about 55 km (34 miles), and weak-to-light shaking was probably felt throughout northern Papua Province, and possibly parts of northwest Papua New Guinea. There have been no initial reports of damage or casualties. It could take several hours until authorities can conduct comprehensive damage assessments, especially in remote areas.
