Israel, Palestine: Increased security and transport disruptions likely during Purim celebrations, Feb. 25-26

Authorities will almost certainly heighten security in key areas of Israel and the Palestinian Territories for Purim holiday celebrations, which will occur from sundown Feb. 25 through the evening of Feb. 26. Elevated security measures could remain in place through Feb. 28. In Israel, security forces will probably establish roadblocks and checkpoints at the entrances to major cities and other heavily populated areas; however, increased security and major traffic disruptions are likely throughout the country.

In the West Bank, freedom of movement will almost certainly be restricted during the celebrations, as is standard practice for Israeli festivals and holidays. Israeli forces will likely close checkpoints outside Ramallah, Jenin, Nablus, Bethlehem, Hebron, Jericho, Tulkarm, and Qalqilya through Feb. 28. Palestinians may clash with Israeli security forces at checkpoints throughout the West Bank. Clashes between Israeli settlers and Palestinians in the region are also possible. Israeli officials could also restrict access to the Temple Mount/Al-Aqsa Mosque compound in Jerusalem during the holiday period. All crossings along the Israel-Gaza border will very probably be closed.

Additionally, Israeli authorities have announced that this year's Purim celebrations will be restricted to nuclear family members in efforts to combat the spread of COVID-19. Synagogues will be permitted to hold services at 50 percent capacity for individuals who have received both doses of a COVID-19 vaccine or who have recovered from the disease. Alternatively, synagogues may hold services for the general public that are limited to ten worshippers indoors or 20 outdoors. Other gatherings and parades are prohibited; however, no movement restrictions for Purim have been announced.

Advice

Allow extra time for travel during the holiday period. Ensure all travel and vehicle documents are in order. Heed the advice of authorities, including officers at security checkpoints. Avoid loitering near security checkpoints and main entrances to hotels, restaurants, or government buildings. Seek updated information on security conditions and possible movement restrictions in the West Bank and East Jerusalem before traveling. Do not attempt to bypass security checkpoints; even an accidental breach of the security cordon near a checkpoint may prompt Israeli security forces to respond aggressively.
