Event
The opposition Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) plans to hold a rally outside the PPM head office in Male from 1600 Feb. 12. Organizers intend to demand that authorities release former President Abdulla Yameen, who was convicted in 2019 on money laundering charges. Several dozen to a few hundred people will likely participate in the gathering.
Security personnel will likely monitor the protest and may try to break up the rally if it is especially disruptive. Clashes between police and protesters are possible, especially if security forces forcibly attempt to disperse the protest. Police may arrest demonstrators at the gathering. Localized transport disruptions are possible near the demonstration site.
Advice
Avoid the protest due to possible violence. If clashes break out, leave the area and take shelter in a secure, nongovernmental building. Heed all security personnel instructions. Allow additional travel time in the area.
