Authorities are maintaining increased security in parts of Hela Province as of Feb. 2, following an outbreak of tribal violence in the region. At least 17 people in Tari-Pori District have died during attacks by members of rival groups prompted by a dispute over land rights. The violence has displaced thousands of civilians; authorities have deployed hundreds of additional police officers to the region.
Additional periods of tribal violence are possible in the coming days. Confrontations could quickly spread to nearby areas. Renewed fighting could prompt authorities to declare a state of emergency in parts of or across the entirety of Hela Province. Businesses, government offices, and markets may close in areas perceived to be unstable. Transportation services could also be suspended in the region.

Confirm all regional transport arrangements and notify local police of arrival. Heed all instructions from local security personnel. Ensure businesses are open, and local security personnel are permitting ground travel, before departure. If violence erupts, immediately leave the area or seek shelter in a secure location, such as a police station.
