Papua New Guinea: Public holidays declared March 1 and 12 amid nationwide mourning period

Papua New Guinea declares public holiday March 1 and 12 to mourn former leader. Increased security, disruptions likely near official events.

Warning

Event

Papua New Guinea will continue a mourning period for its founding prime minister Michael Somare through March 12. The government has declared March 1 and 12 as public holidays. Officials will reduce government services on the holidays, and business disruptions are likely nationwide. Essential government and emergency functions, such as hospitals and public utilities, will continue to operate.

Authorities have established Sir John Guise Indoor Stadium in Port Moresby as a designated mourning site. The government has also set March 11 for communities to gather at schools nationwide to honor the former leader. Officials have yet to announce details of an upcoming state funeral; however, the former prime minister will be buried in Kreer Heights in Wewak, East Sepik Province. Thousands of people could turn out for the funeral and at the burial site.

Tight security measures are most likely during the funeral and burial sites, as well as along the funeral procession route. Heightened security is possible near community events March 11. Temporary road closures and localized transport disruptions are likely near official events.

Advice

Confirm business appointments March 1 and 12. If operating in Port Moresby and Wewak, consider avoiding event venues if not attending. Allow additional time for transport during the state funeral and for burial services. Follow all instructions from security personnel.
