Event

Two blasts involving improvised explosive devices (IEDs) occurred along a national highway in Barangay Putiao, Pilar, Sorsogon Province in southern Luzon at around 0725 Feb. 22. Reports indicate that the attackers ambushed security personnel and engaged in a gunfight. The incident injured a police officer and three civilians. Officials have attributed the attack to members of the New People's Army (NPA).

Heightened security and localized transport disruptions are likely in the coming hours as investigations continue. Business disruptions are possible if further security incidents occur.

The incident site is around 13 km (8 miles) south-southwest of Legazpi City.

Context

While NPA is mostly active in Mindanao, the group has also engaged in clashes with authorities in southern Luzon, including Sorsogon Province. President Rodrigo Duterte said Dec. 7 that he would not allow any ceasefire between the government and the NPA during the rest of his administration through 2022.
