Indonesia: Increased security likely in Jakarta following March 31 attack on National Police Headquarters /update 1

Increased security likely in Jakarta, Indonesia, following March 31 attack on National Police Headquarters. Disruptions possible.

Critical

Event

Police have increased security in Jakarta following an attempted attack at the National Police Headquarters in South Jakarta that took place at around 16:30 March 31. Police shot and killed the perpetrator after she fired on officers outside the facility. Authorities are treating the situation as a suspected terror attack; officials say the perpetrator posted images associated with Islamic State (IS) on social media accounts several hours before the incident. Officials have recently arrested several individuals, including five suspects in Jakarta, alleged to have links to the March 28 suicide bombing at the Makassar Cathedral Church in Makassar, South Sulawesi Province. Authorities are concerned that the suspect in the attempted attack at the National Police Headquarters may be linked to a larger cell of militants.

Officials have deployed additional personnel and increased security measures at the National Police Headquarters and other police facilities in Jakarta. Authorities will also likely tighten security at government and military installations, major transport hubs, religious sites, and other possible target sites as a precaution. Security forces could impose cordons near sensitive sites, causing localized transport disruptions.

Advice

Heed all advice of security personnel. Exercise caution near potential militant target sites. Carry identification documents to present at security checks. Allow additional travel time as a precaution.
