A magnitude-5.5 earthquake occurred
in the Indian Ocean off the coast of Bengkulu Province, Indonesia, at about 1956 March 8. The epicenter was approximately 158 km (98 miles) west-southwest of Bengkulu, Indonesia. The tremor occurred at a depth of approximately 10 km (6 miles), and light-to-moderate shaking was probably felt near the epicenter off the coast of Bengkulu Province. Weak-to-light shaking was probably felt across Bengkulu Province. There have been no initial reports of damage or casualties as a result of the earthquake; however, significant damage is unlikely due to the location of the earthquake. It could take several hours until authorities can conduct comprehensive damage assessments, especially in remote areas. Aftershocks are possible over the coming days. The event has not prompted any tsunami advisories.
