Jordan: Activists plan to rally nationwide March 24
Activists plan to rally nationwide in Jordan from 16:00 March 24. Increased security, localized disruptions likely.
Event
Activists affiliated with the United Jordanian Movement plan to rally nationwide from 16:00 March 24 to commemorate the 10th anniversary of the "Youth of March 24" protest, which took place in 2011. Organizers have announced gatherings at the following locations:
Amman: Dakhliya Circle
Aqaba: Princess Haya Circle
Irbid: Outside the Governorate building
Karak: Omari Mosque
Madaba: Peace Square
Mafraq: Jerash Circle
Tafilah: Outside the Governorate building
Further actions could also take place in other towns and cities nationwide. Increased security, as well as localized business and transport disruptions, are likely near the rally sites, especially for gatherings with larger turnouts. Clashes between police and protesters are possible, particularly if demonstrators are overly disruptive or if they ignore police orders to disperse.
Context
Hundreds of protesters gathered at the Dakhliya Circle in Amman March 24, 2011 to demand the resignation of then Prime Minister Marouf al-Bakhit, political reforms, and an end to corruption. The protest was initially peaceful but turned violent after clashes with counter-protesters and security forces broke out, resulting in at at least one fatality and approximately 100 injuries.
Advice
Avoid all rallies due to the potential for clashes. Heed the advice of security personnel. Allow additional time to reach destinations near the affected areas, March 24.
