Papua New Guinea: Authorities tightening COVID-19 restrictions in Morobe Province through March 19
Officials enforcing tighter COVID-19 measures in Morobe Province, Papua New Guinea, through 1200 March 19. Disruptions possible.
Event
Authorities have tightened restrictions across Morobe Province through 1200 March 19 due to rising COVID-19 activity in Lae, Huon Gulf, and Nawae districts. Officials have banned gatherings of more than 50 people. Retail stores and markets can continue to operate, but owners must closely enforce social distancing and hygiene edicts. Restaurants must limit capacity to 50 percent. High-risk businesses, such as gambling houses, bars, and nightclubs, have closed. All companies must deny service to customers without facemasks.
The provincial government may increase security during the period; however, enforcement of social distancing requirements may be lax. Unrest has previously occurred due to restrictions in Lae, and further protests cannot be ruled out. Localized transport disruptions could occur if demonstrations take place.
Advice
Follow all official instructions. Remain polite and nonconfrontational if questioned by security personnel. Avoid crowded areas as a precaution. If an unruly crowd forms nearby, immediately leave the area and seek shelter in a secure location.
