Philippines: Tight security likely in Datu Saudi Ampatuan, Maguindanao, as of March 19, following fighting in the region
Officials likely increasing security in Datu Saudi Ampatuan, Maguindanao, Philippines, as of March 19, after clashes in the area.
Event
Officials are likely heightening security in Datu Saudi Ampatuan Municipality, Maguindanao Province, as of March 19, following clashes between the military and Bangsamoro Islamic Freedom Fighters (BIFF) militants in the area. The fighting, which began the previous day, has killed at least three insurgents and injured at least three soldiers. The clashes have also displaced hundreds of locals, who have fled to surrounding localities, including Datu Piang, Mamasapano, Shariff Aguak, and Shariff Saydona.
The increased security measures, which may include setting up checkpoints and security cordons, will probably remain in place in the region in the coming days. The heightened security measures and any additional clashes are likely to result in transport disruptions in the area; officials have previously closed major roads near conflict zones in the region. Further skirmishes may occur in the coming days.
The impact area is around 37 km (23 miles) southeast of Cotabato City.
Context
Maguindanao is part of the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM), an autonomous region in the southern Philippines that is a conflict area. Despite BARMM's formation in 2019, clashes between military forces and BIFF remain frequent in the region. Future outbreaks of violence are possible.

Reach out to trusted local contacts to determine security conditions, as reporting is often delayed.
