Authorities are increasing security in Madang and the surrounding area as of March 15 after a prison break at Beon Prison. According to belated reports, more than 40 prisoners escaped the facility March 10. Officials have recaptured two escapees; police killed two other prisoners in a confrontation in Yabob village March 13.

Authorities will likely deploy additional officers in Madang in the coming days. Officials have warned residents to be cautious as some escapees were convicted of violent crimes.
