South Pacific: Authorities lift tsunami advisory following magnitude-8.1 earthquake near Kermadec Islands, early March 6 /update 3

Officials lift tsunami warning early March 6 after magnitude-8.1 earthquake near Kermadec Islands, South Pacific Ocean. Aftershocks likely.

Critical

Event

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center (PTWC) has lifted its tsunami advisory for all countries and territories early March 6 following a magnitude-8.1 offshore earthquake in the South Pacific Ocean near the Kermadec Islands at around 0628 NZDT March 5. The quake's epicenter was approximately 834 km (518 miles) north-northeast of Auckland, New Zealand. The temblor occurred at a depth of approximately 10 km (6 miles). Very strong shaking was reported on the Kermadec Islands - a location inhabited only by small scientific teams from New Zealand at certain times of the year. Dozens of aftershocks have occurred, and more are likely over the coming days.

Advice

Plan accordingly for additional aftershocks, some of which may be of considerable magnitude. In the event of further seismic events, consider vacating multistory buildings if operating in affected areas until authorities confirm their structural integrity. Allow additional time for air and road travel, as aftershocks may prompt brief disruptions. Although the tsunami threat has subsided, continue to monitor the situation for additional aftershocks and tsunami threats in the future.
