Warning

Event

Members of the Mine Union Workers of Zambia (MUZ), United Mine Workers Union (UMUZ), National Union of Miners and Allied Workers (NUMAW) may stage additional protests in Chingola, Copperbelt Province, from March 5 over grievances with Konkola Copper Mines (KCM). Locals protested March 2 over a lack of economic opportunities and development and are demanding that KCM pay delayed payments of terminal benefits.

Security forces will likely remain deployed in the town to deter further demonstrations. Attempts by security forces to disperse gatherings or prevent protests from forming could increase the potential for disturbances. Police may use tear gas, water cannon, batons, rubber bullets, and live ammunition to disperse protesters. Transport disruptions and tight security are likely near any gatherings that materialize.

Advice

Avoid all protests due to the potential for clashes. Leave the area immediately at the first sign of any disturbance. Heed the instructions of security personnel.
