PNG: Authorities enacting entry restrictions in East New Britain through May 4

Papua New Guinea officials enforcing entry restrictions in East New Britain through May 4. Business disruptions possible.

Warning

Event

Authorities have suspended entry into East New Britain Province through at least May 4 to stem the spread of COVID-19. It is unclear whether the policy affects residents of the province. Exemptions are likely in place for safety, public health, or humanitarian reasons.

Authorities will probably maintain increased security protocols through May 4 to enforce restrictions. Officials have erected eight checkpoints and increased patrols at entry points, including New Britain Highway. Approved sea entry points for passengers who can still enter East New Britain include Tokunar and Kokopo's JJ Seeto beachfront. Supply chain and business disruptions are possible due to transport curbs.

Advice

Heed the instructions of authorities. Avoid all nonessential operations in the affected area. Confirm transport reservations. Remain cooperative if questioned by law enforcement officers.
