Israel: Clashes between members of the Jewish and Arab communities likely to continue through the end of May /update 1

Clashes between Jewish and Arab communities likely to continue across Israel, primarily in mixed-population towns, through the end of May.

Critical

Event

Clashes between members of the Jewish and Arab communities persist across Israel and are likely to continue nationwide, primarily in mixed-population towns, through the end of May. Since unrest first erupted on May 10, more than 900 people have been arrested amid severe violence and rioting; approximately 15,000 police and border guards continue to actively respond to security incidents nationwide. Violent demonstrations and riots have occurred in a number of towns including Jerusalem, Tiberias, Haifa, Jaffa, Bat Yam, Acre, and Lod. Several attempted lynchings have allegedly also taken place in various parts of the country. Widespread incidents of vandalism and arson have occurred, targeting synagogues, mosques, local businesses, and cars, among other properties. Rioters have also reportedly thrown stones and firebombs in clashes with security forces.

Further clashes and rioting are highly likely throughout Israel amid heightened Israeli-Palestinian tensions and ongoing cross-border fire with Gaza. Additional security is likely in areas experiencing unrest. Authorities may also deploy military personnel and impose curfews in an effort to quell unrest.

Advice

Remain vigilant in all areas of Israel and the Palestinian Territories over the coming days due to the high potential for violence. Avoid any demonstrations that may materialize. Confirm the availability of transport and allow additional time to reach destinations in the vicinity of any demonstrations. Heed the instructions of security personnel. Monitor local media and liaise with trusted contacts for updates on protest activity as organizers may not announce plans in advance.
