Israel: Fires caused by incendiary balloons launched from Gaza cause multiple fires, some localized transport disruptions as of May 9
Fires caused by incendiary balloons from Gaza cause multiple fires, some localized transport disruptions in southern Israel as of May 9.
Event
Israeli officials have reported at least 20 fires caused by incendiary balloons launched from Gaza as of May 9. Fires have occurred in the regional councils of Sdot Negev, Sha'ar HaNegev and Eshkol. Authorities have imposed road closures in some affected areas. A larger blaze prompted officials to temporarily suspend rail services between Ashkelon and Netivot. Evacuations may be imposed if fires spread to residential areas.
The action comes amid especially heightened regional tensions linked to Jerusalem Day and a land dispute in East Jerusalem. Gazan militants have launched multiple rockets in recent days. Further militant rocket and incendiary balloons launches are possible in the coming days. The Israeli military could also conduct additional retaliatory airstrikes against militant targets in Gaza City and Khan Younis.
Context
In recent years militants have launched numerous incendiary kites and explosives attached to balloons towards residential areas in southern Israel adjacent to the Gaza Strip. These attacks usually cause relatively minor property damage; however, as of May 9 the frequency of incidents and their impact appears to be especially elevated.
Advice
Heed all directives from the authorities. Confirm regional transport arrangements and seek updated information on road conditions if driving in the affected area. Individuals not under evacuation warnings should consider remaining inside well-ventilated, air-conditioned spaces to reduce exposure to smoke. Collect essential items - including identification and any important legal and travel documents - in a "go-bag" that can be easily accessed. Monitor local media and abide by security force directives. If possible, avoid areas within 5 km (3 miles) of the Gaza buffer zone until the security situation improves.
Individuals or entities operating in the Gaza Strip are advised to avoid known Hamas security force locations, which are common targets for Israeli retaliatory airstrikes. Establish a thorough communication plan to ensure rapid accountability for all personnel operating in southern Israel and the Gaza Strip.
