Kazakhstan: Opposition protests to take place in Nur-Sultan, Almaty, and Shymkent, May 29-30
Protests against political oppression scheduled in major cities of Kazakhstan May 29-30; localized disruptions likely, violence possible.
Event
Opposition activists are planning to rally in major cities May 29-30 to denounce political repression and to call for the release of political prisoners. Participants will gather on both days from 18:00-21:00 at the following locations:
Nur-Sultan: Central Park and the Kenesary Khan Monument
Almaty: Gorky Park, Zhibek-Zholy street, and the Park of the First President
Shymkent: Independence Park and the Arbat, Beibitshilik Avenue
Smaller demonstrations are possible in other cities.
Although the events will probably pass off without major incidents, increased security could prompt localized disruptions. It is unclear whether the gatherings have been authorized; police are highly likely to disperse unauthorized protests and will not hesitate to use force if resisted. Security forces could disperse even authorized demonstrations if participants become disruptive or demonstrate beyond the agreed timings or venues.
Advice
Avoid all demonstrations as a routine precaution and to mitigate related disruptions. Leave the area immediately at the first sign of a confrontation.
