Further protests by factory workers are likely in Maseru through at least late May following demonstrations May 25. Protesters are demanding the government increase the minimum wage. Violent unrest occurred May 25 in the Thetsane and Tikoe industrial areas where protesters disrupted road traffic and erected roadblocks with burning tires. Previously, clashes with security forces over the same issue in the Thetsane industrial area injured at least 12 individuals, May 21. Unions claimed that security forces used live rounds to disperse protesters.

Authorities will likely maintain a heightened presence in the capital near all demonstrations in the coming weeks. Further clashes between protesters and security forces are likely. Officials could tighten movement restrictions if the security situation deteriorates further in the coming weeks. The use of live ammunition cannot be ruled out.
