Maldives: Officials increase security in Male, as of May 18, in response to an unspecified security threat

Authorities are maintaining increased security measures in parts of Male after reportedly receiving information about an unspecified security threat. As of May 18, officials have deployed additional security personnel in and around the People's Majlis and Velana International Airport (MLE). Increased security measures are also possible near other sensitive locations, including transport hubs and major tourist facilities, throughout the Maldives. Officials have not specified the time frame for the apparently heightened security threat.

Additional security checkpoints may be imposed in the coming days. Roadblocks are possible. Security measures may prompt localized transport and commercial disruptions near sensitive sites.

Context

The apparent security threat may be related to a recent bombing attack in Male. A blast occurred outside the home of the former president and current Speaker of the People's Majlis Mohamed Nasheed on Neeloafaru Magu late May 6. Islamic State (IS) members claimed responsibility for the attack. IS and its followers also claimed responsibility for at least three minor attacks in the Maldives in 2020. Authorities regularly arrest suspected sympathizers and members of Islamist terror groups, though conviction rates remain low. Historically, there have been no mass-casualty terror attacks in the Maldives.
