Syria: Increased security and localized disruptions likely in lead-up to presidential elections May 26

Increased security and localized disruptions likely in lead-up to Syria's May 26 presidential elections.

Warning

Event

Syrian authorities will likely maintain an increased security posture nationwide through the May 26 presidential elections. Incumbent President Bashar al-Assad will be seeking a fourth term in office in his race against two government-approved candidates, former state minister of parliamentary affairs Abdullah Salloum Abdullah and head of the National Democratic Front Mahmoud Ahmad Marei. The elections, however, will not take place in areas under the control of the Kurdish-led Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria (NES).

Security forces will almost certainly deploy to monitor all demonstrations or rallies that may occur during the election season. Localized traffic disruptions are likely near possible rally locations. Tensions and associated protests could persist after the election if accusations of irregularities emerge.

Advice

Exercise increased personal vigilance for the duration of the election period. Avoid all demonstrations and associated gatherings due to the possibility of violence. Keep away from areas where security personnel appear to be deploying. If clashes break out nearby, take shelter in a safe non-governmental building. Monitor trusted local news sources for developments. Heed all instructions from security personnel and allow extra time to reach destinations near rally locations.
