Protest by French fishing boats ongoing at seaward entrance to Saint Helier harbor, Jersey, UK; localized maritime disruption possible.

Informational

Event

French fishing boats are currently holding a protest at the seaward entrance to the island of Jersey's Saint Helier harbor the morning of May 6. The participating vessels have reportedly allowed maritime traffic, including a freight ship, to pass freely; however, they may attempt to restrict the passage of UK fishing vessels.

Two UK naval ships have been deployed to the area to monitor the protest. They may intervene if shipping is significantly disrupted.

Context

French fishing unions are frustrated over the impact on their members' ability to fish in UK waters following the end of the Brexit transition period Dec. 31, 2020, despite apparent guarantees from the UK authorities. Further protests are likely in and around Channel Island fishing ports in the coming months.

Advice

Anticipate potential disruptions to maritime shipping using the port of Saint Helier May 6. Do not attempt to cross any maritime blockades.
