China: CCP 100th anniversary events to take place nationwide through July 1; tight security in Beijing
Events for 100th anniversary of the Chinese Communist Party to take place nationwide through July 1. Tight security likely in Beijing.
Event
China will celebrate the 100th anniversary of the Chinese Communist Party's (CCP) July 1. While the day is not a public holiday, local governments nationwide will hold commemorative events to mark the ruling party's founding. Increased security is likely near prominent government buildings and important CCP sites nationwide, especially in major cities. Localized transport and business disruptions are possible near events.
The largest celebration will occur in Beijing, where the party plans to hold official events in Tiananmen Square and surrounding areas. Extremely tight security will continue in the capital through at least July 1. Road closures are scheduled on several roads near the event site, leading to traffic disruptions. Security measures will impact dozens of bus routes through the center of the city. Officials will close subway stations near Tiananmen Square, including Tiananmen West, Tiananmen East, Xidan, Wangfujin, Dongdan, Qianmen, Hepingmen, and Chongwenmen, starting the evening of June 30. Subway service disruptions and temporary station closures will occur on several lines through July 1; however, the most prolonged disruptions will probably occur on lines 1, 2, 4, 5, and 6. Business disruptions are highly likely in affected areas in central Beijing.
Demonstrations against the party or specific grievances against local governments cannot be entirely ruled out. However, any gatherings that occur will likely remain small. Security personnel will also move quickly to disperse any protests.
Advice
Unless attending events July 1, exercise caution due to increased security. Plan for localized transport and business disruptions, especially in major cities. In Beijing, avoid Tiananmen Square late June 30-July 1 due to increased security measures and transport disruptions. Consider delaying travel to surrounding areas in central Beijing; allow additional time to reach destinations if travel is unavoidable. Plan for increased employee absenteeism if operating near event sites in the capital. Follow the instructions of authorities and carry identification. Do not photograph or record any security operations, as personnel may confiscate or destroy equipment.
