Israel: Authorities cancel Israeli Flag March through Jerusalem’s Old City planned for June 10 /update 1
Officials cancel Israeli Flag March through Jerusalem’s Old City slated for June 10; event could be rescheduled.
Event
Authorities have canceled the annual Israeli Flag March that was scheduled for June 10 in East Jerusalem amid concerns that organizers' request to march through the Old City's Damascus Gate could spark violence amid heightened Israeli-Palestinian tensions. A ceasefire agreement that came into effect May 21 ended the most intense cross-border fire between the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) and militant groups in the Gaza Strip in almost a decade.
The parade is traditionally held on Jerusalem Day (May 10) to commemorate the reunification of Jerusalem and the establishment of Israeli control over the Old City in June 1967 following the Six-Day War. However, last month’s parade was rerouted due to clashes between police and Palestinian protesters and subsequently canceled after the recent cross-border conflict between the IDF and militant groups in the Gaza Strip.
The event could be rescheduled in the coming days; Israeli police have stated that officials could approve the event if organizers were to exclude the Damascus Gate as part of the march route.
