Event
Authorities are increasing security in the Gigo area of Kimbe, West New Britain Province, as of June 8 after violent clashes in the city. The conflict between residents of zones 1 and 8 escalated after young people from Zone 8 allegedly killed a resident of Zone 1. Parties have reportedly used gunfire in some clashes and set fire to at least 10 homes in Zone 8. Local officials indicate that young people from other wards have gotten involved in the conflict and have warned that fighting could spill over into central Kimbe. Authorities have not been able to calm tensions, despite engaging in talks. The conflict has left one person dead and at least eight others injured.
Police reinforcements could set up roadblocks or checkpoints to limit movement between the affected wards in the Gigo area and Kimbe township. Further fighting, including between police and rival groups, is possible. Vandalism may also occur at establishments near future clashes. Security measures and skirmishes could cause localized transport and business disruptions, especially in Gigo.
Advice
Exercise caution if operating in Gigo and nearby areas in Kimbe. Check with local contacts on the status of roads before driving in Kimbe and surrounding areas; use alternative routes to avoid likely areas for clashes and allow additional time to reach destinations. Avoid any significant concentrations of people or security personnel to the extent possible due to the potential for violence. If fighting breaks out nearby, immediately depart the area if movement is possible or shelter in place away from any windows if transport is not feasible. Follow all official instructions.
