Iranian-backed militias targeted US coalition forces at a military base at the Al-Omar oil field in Deir Ez-Zur Governorate late June 28. The attack was allegedly carried out with rocket-propelled grenades. US coalition forces have reportedly conducted retaliatory strikes against Iranian-backed forces in the vicinity of Al-Mayadin; however, US authorities have yet to comment on or confirm the incident. There have been no initial reports of casualties.
The attack follows US airstrikes against sites belonging to Iranian-backed militias in the Syria-Iraq border region early June 28. Further airstrikes and retaliatory attacks remain possible over the coming days.
