Taiwan: Transport disruptions possible islandwide during Dragon Boat Festival June 12-14
Taiwan to celebrate Dragon Boat Festival June 12-14. Main events to take place in Taipei. Transport disruptions possible islandwide.
Event
Taiwan will celebrate the Dragon Boat Festival (Duanwu) June 14. Authorities have designated June 12-14 as public holidays in 2021. Dragon boat races will take place in Taipei on the Dajia River. However, officials have curtailed turnout for the competitions and events at Dajia Riverside Park and other areas of the capital due to COVID-19. Increased security and social distancing measures are likely at all public events that do occur.
Transport disruptions are possible during the festival, despite significantly less travel than previous years. While train and bus passenger volume has drastically decreased, travelers may use private vehicles. Transport authorities are implementing traffic controls to limit vehicles on main highways and closing services at rest stops. However, congestion remains possible on Freeway 1 (Sun Yat-sen Freeway), Freeway 3 (Formosa Freeway), and Freeway 5 (Chiang Wei-shui Memorial Freeway) during peak travel periods through June 14. Heavy traffic may cause logistics disruptions, particularly for commercial trucking.
Advice
Allow extra time to reach destinations if driving long distances is unavoidable during the holiday period. Arrive earlier than usual at transport hubs due to potential delays at check-in counters, health screenings, and security checkpoints.
