Security personnel allegedly fire upon opposition leader in Chingola, Zambia, June 6. Further incidents likely ahead of Aug. 12 election.

Further incidents of political violence are likely ahead of the country's Aug. 12 general elections after related violence in Chingola, Copperbelt Province June 6. According to reports, security personnel opened fire on a motorcade carrying the president of the opposition United Party for National Development (UPND), Hakainde Hichilema. Several police vehicles reportedly blocked the road on which the motorcade was traveling and opened fire. Unconfirmed reports suggest police may have used live ammunition; police, however, stated that they only used tear gas. No injuries were reported in the incident.
Context
Hichilema released a statement accusing the ruling Patriotic Front (PF) of organizing the attack. Leaders of several political parties have condemned the incident, noting that further such incidents are possible in the lead up to the Aug. 12 general election.
