Fighting between Afghan security forces and the Taliban has been reported in multiple areas in and around Herat since early July 29. As of late July 29, officials report ongoing clashes around the Pul-e-Malan area in the city's southern outskirts. Officials say that at least forty Taliban fighters have died in the fighting, though the estimate cannot be independently verified. Security force and civilian casualties are unclear.

Officials have reportedly suspended flights at Herat International Airport (HEA) July 29 as a precaution. Additional regional transport disruptions are highly likely.

Authorities will maintain heightened security measures, including road closures, and personnel and vehicle checks in the coming days. Officials may impose temporary and localized movement restrictions. Local businesses are also likely to close as a security precaution. Further armed clashes are possible in the coming days.
