Afghanistan: Authorities impose 22:00-04:00 nightly curfew across most of the country from July 24 to stem Taliban advance

Authorities impose 22:00-04:00 nightly curfew across most of Afghanistan from July 24 until further notice to stem Taliban advance.

Warning

Event

Authorities in Afghanistan have imposed a 22:00-04:00 nightly curfew across 31 of the country's 34 provinces effective July 24 until further notice; only Kabul, Panjshir, and Nangarhar provinces are exempt from the measure. The purpose of the curfew is to curb violence and stem rapid territorial advances made by the Taliban in recent weeks.

Security forces will likely conduct patrols and establish checkpoints during curfew hours. Heightened security measures will likely result in localized traffic and business disruptions.

Context

Fighting between the Taliban and Afghan security forces has escalated over the past two months amid the withdrawal of international forces from the country. Taliban militants have captured strategic border crossings, key roads, and large swaths of territory in remote areas; the group is estimated to be in control of up to half of the country's territory. While the Taliban has so far failed to gain control of any of the country's provincial capitals, its fighters have recently been making advances on several key cities, such as Kandahar.

Advice

Strictly comply with the curfew and heed other instructions from local authorities. Confirm business appointments, transport reservations, road status, and deliveries in advance. Ensure contingency plans account for business and transport disruptions if operating in an affected area. Remain courteous and cooperative if stopped by security personnel.
